AUSTIN, Texas -- President Donald Trump was in Texas Thursday to meet with families of the victims of the Santa Fe High School shooting.

He was joined by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, both Republicans. They greeted Trump on the tarmac after he stepped off of Air Force One at a military base in Houston. Trump's trip comes one day after Abbott called for schools to have more armed personnel and that districts should put greater focus on spotting student mental health problems.

Trump is also in the state to attend a fundraiser and dinner.

Also Thursday, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, the Texas Senate Hispanic Caucus and other parties represented by MALDEF sued the Trump administration in an effort to keep a controversial citizenship question off the 2020 census.

"With the inclusion of a citizenship question, Texas and our border communities will lose out on our fair share of representation and billions of federal dollars because of an undercount. Unfortunately, our state leaders have become complicit on this maneuver to under-count Texas,” Rep. Cesar Blanco, Chairman of the Border Caucus, said.

This will be the first time since 1950 that a question about citizenship status is asked on the census. We’ll have more about how this change would affect Texas.

Thursday night, a new spelling Bee Champion will be crowned. Our Washington Reporter Kevin Frey will have more on the Texans still in the competition.
