AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin's next top honor might come in the form of a weather record. 

With an average temperature of 80.2 degrees so far, there's a good chance the month will be remembered as the hottest May in Capital City history.

Records since 1897 show May 1996 as the hottest with an average temperature of 80.6 degrees, according to NOAA. It's been 10 years since the city made the top 10 list.

In the above video, Chief Meteorologist Burton Fitzsimmons tells us that, if the forecast pans out, records could easily tumble.
