AUSTIN, Texas — Police will be out on Texas lakes this Memorial Day weekend patrolling to prevent reckless boating and making sure everyone in the water stays safe.

This weekend, jet skis are banned on lake Austin until Tuesday morning.

Police also want to reminds visitors that if you're on a boat, you need to maintain a safe speed and designate a sober driver.

"Make sure that everyone does, in fact, have a personal floatation device that is properly fitted for each person on board, and is readily available, so if there is an emergency, it's easily accessible, you can grab it, and don the life jacket," Officer John O’Donnell said.

Other things boaters are required to have is a fire extinguisher, an air horn or other noise-maker in case of visibility issues, and a floatation device to throw out to swimmers in distress.
