SAN ANTONIO - Two former San Antonio Spurs Silver Dancers are speaking out after learning the NBA professional dance team was suddenly removed from the game day experience and Spurs organization.

Spurs Sports & Entertainment's co-ed squad, 'Team Energy', was also dismissed following the organization's announcement of a new hype team on May 18.

"They said it was lack of fan interests and that the decision was final," Teresa Cantu a former Silver Dancer said.

The new 35-member co-ed team will debut this coming season. A press release announced the decision with the goal of energizing crowds with their tumbling, acrobatics, dance and stunts.

“We are excited to announce our new Spurs hype team,” Spurs Sports & Entertainment Vice President Tammy Turner said. “This team will further enhance the game-night experience for Spurs fans at the AT&T Center.”

Melissa Martinez, who was part of the squad from 1994-2000, isn't buying the organization's claims for disbanding the team.

"You can make those teams [hype team and Silver Dancers] work and be that hype team without taking away a 26-year legacy," Martinez she.

Thousands of fans online are pushing for the teams reinstatement by signing a change.org petition created by Martin Alvarez. Martinez hoping the petition will catch the attention of Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

"I'm hoping that it drives enough that they'll want to reinstate [the Silver Dancers.]"

In the meantime, the former dancers are still pushing for more answers as to why the team is done.

"We know this wasn't from lack of fan interest. We know that this isn't because we are not family-friendly because we are. We know that something else is going on and we just want to know what," Cantu said.

She also hopes this isn't a new trend among female dance groups.

"We want keep professional dance alive in San Antonio and we want to keep this from becoming a trend and spreading throughout professional dance within all sports."

A spokesperson for the Spurs did not return calls for comment.
