AUSTIN, Texas — A Travis County Grand Jury indicted a man in a cold case dating back to 1979.

Sixty-four-year-old Michael Anthony Galvan was indicted with one count of capital murder and one count of murder. Galvan stands accused of sexually assaulting and then murdering Debra Sue Reiding at her apartment on Algarita Avenue in Austin.

The incident occurred nearly 40 years ago on January 22, 1979.

At the time of her death, Reiding was 18 years old and had recently moved to Austin with her newlywed husband, Robert John Reiding. The couple had previously resided in Montana.

Galvan was a suspect in 1979, but there was not sufficient evidence to charge him in relation to the crime. Advances in DNA technology allowed detectives to positively link him to the crime.

Galvan has worked and lived in Austin since the time of the crime.

Currently more than 20 Travis County Assistant District Attorneys are re-working nearly 190 cases. The APD Cold Case Unit, along with the Travis County District Attorney’s office, have solved 28 cases to date.

“We want to commend the Austin Police Department, specifically the Cold Case Unit, in its perseverance and dedication to this case," Asst. District Attorney Keith M. Henneke said.

Henneke is the lead prosecutor for this case.

Galvan was arrested and booked in to Travis County Jail. His bond was set at $750,000.
