AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Humane Society has activated its Emergency Pet Shelter after taking more than 60 animals off the hands of a nonprofit rescue group along the Texas border.

  • Rescued from a South Texas border shelter
  • 30-40 more anticipated in the coming weeks
  • Cats, dogs, puppies, kittens $20 to adoption Saturday-Monday

In an effort to make room for the new residents, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, all animals who are ready to go home – that means they are already spayed/neutered – will have $20 adoption fees. This includes puppies, cats, kittens and dogs.

An AHS response team deployed Wednesday and brought back dozens of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens on Thursday night.

The animals all have varying medical needs. AHS’ veterinary team is currently assessing those medical needs as well as vaccinating, microchipping, grooming and providing spay/neuter services. All of these animals will eventually be up for adoption.

“This mission was about getting this rescue group out of crisis and giving them some room to make changes,”said Dr. Katie Luke, AHS’ Chief Operations Officer who also led the response team. “We will continue to support them as they navigate developing an infrastructure to support animals in their community.”

While this week’s mission will allow the rescue to give better care for the animals it continues to house, the AHS response team said it will return to the border in the next few weeks to remove remaining animals as well as begin conversations about next steps.
