AUSTIN, Texas — Austin firefighters say a lack of stations in key areas are putting certain neighborhoods at risk.

The Austin Fire Department's goal is to reach every area of Austin in 8 minutes or less, but Del Valle and parts of Travis Country are seeing slower response times with crews taking at least 12 minutes to get there.

The fire department and union are asking the City Council to create temporary fire stations in those two areas. They would act as place holders, as the city works to create permanent stations.

Union leaders say the City is slow at building fire stations. They say part of the problem is the $11 million price tag the city puts on its fire stations. The temporary stations would cost $500,000.
