AUSTIN, Texas -- Advocates on both sides of the gun control debate sat on either side of Gov. Greg Abbott during Wednesday’s school safety roundtable.

The meeting lasted about three hours and comes in the wake of the Santa Fe school shooting last week where 10 people were killed.

Wednesday, Gov. Abbott said he could get behind several gun-related regulations such as reporting the loss or theft of a gun and speeding up mental health reporting for those who have lost the right to have a gun. The panel also discussed increasing mental health services for students. Abbott said ideas included screening programs, expanding mental health first aid and increasing mental health staff in schools.

When asked about funding, he told reporters he thinks lawmakers will support school safety.

"I believe that there will be the commitment in the Capitol to make sure that we are smart and strategic in providing the resources that are necessary in keeping our fellow citizens and students safe," Abbott said.

Ed Scruggs with Texas Gun Sense was part of Wednesday's roundtable discussion. His group advocates for strengthening gun regulations in the state. He said his group pushed for a moderate approach, including expanding gun storage laws.

"Our gun storage laws, the way the laws are written and also the need for a safe storage public relations campaign or education effort across the state," Scruggs said. "It’s a concept that everyone agrees on there are just different approaches on how to get there."
