AUSTIN, Texas -- A research and advocacy group on children's issues revealed its choices for top public schools in Texas.

Each year Children At Risk, a nonprofit organization, researches and ranks Texas schools on achievement, performance, growth, and college readiness.

Monday, the group announced the top performing elementary, middle, and high schools in the Austin area. Children At Risk said Austin schools perform well compared to state, but there is room for improvement.

"By every indicator, schools are getting better. Are they getting better for parents to get excited? Probably not. And then the other thing is for high poverty schools, are they getting better fast enough so that those kids are going to be productive members of society? Again, probably not fast enough,” said Bob Sanborn, Children At Risk president.

LASA High School was named the top public high school in the Austin area. Canyon Vista Middle School and Canyon Creek Elementary, both in Round Rock ISD, won their respective categories.
