AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Department of Public Safety honored Texas officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice on Tuesday.

The families of fallen officers were among the crowd at the 2018 DPS Peace officer Memorial Service in Austin. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick was the guest speaker at the memorial service and extended his gratitude to all of those in law enforcement.

"We in Texas sleep soundly under these stars because of the men and women who put on a badge and a gun and walk out the door every day willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for people they don't even know,” said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.

The families of two officers killed in 2017 placed a memorial wreath during the annual ceremony.  According to the Officer Down Memorial, 16 officers were killed in the line of duty in Texas in 2017.
