TEXAS – As school year wraps up, teachers are already saving up to pay for school supplies in the fall.

According to a new study by the National Center for Education Statistics, teachers have been spending an average of $480 on school supplies every year out of their own pockets.

Teachers often need to buy supplies multiple times during the school year. The cost of supplies adds up, when most teachers earn a little over $45,000 a year.

In Texas, the Texas State Teachers Association found that educators spend way more than the national average at more than $600 annually.

"Every single week, whether it was buying an incentive for my students to help them get through a difficult time, or just basic supplies to help them in the classroom, or part of a reward incentive classroom. Often times buying a jacket for one of my students or purchasing a shirt or something that they would need to help them get through a regular school day," said teacher Noel Candelaria.

The issue is that supplies are considered a work-related expense and should be a tax deduction. However, teachers typically only get $250 back.
