AUSTIN, Texas – On Monday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton reminded residents of the May 31 deadline to submit claims in a $586 million settlement with Western Union.

The incident occurred between Jan. 1, 2004 and Jan. 19, 2017. Paxton said as many as 39,000 Texans are eligible for refunds after people were deceived into sending payments to scam artists using the company’s wire transfer service.

Last year, Paxton announced a multi-state settlement with Western Union. The settlement is being administered by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Victim Asset Recovery Program, which will be reviewing all claims submitted by consumers. The settlement, which included Texas, 49 other states and the District of Columbia, required Western Union to forfeit $586 million and was entered with the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice.

Anyone that was affected by the scam may file a claim online at http://www.westernunionremission.com.

Western Union has agreed to establish an anti-fraud program to deter such criminal activity in the future.
