AUSTIN, Texas — An active shooter expert responds to yesterday's school shooting here in Texas.

The "Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training" or ALERRT is the national standard for active shooter training. The ALERRT center is based at the Texas State University campus in San Marcos, Texas.

It was created in response to the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. After every shooting, researchers determine what techniques are used and update their training to better understand why these events happen and the best way to stay safe when they do.

Executive Director Pete Blair says it is always disappointing when hearing of another active shooter situation.

"It's always horrible. We really do try to work ourselves out of a job here. We would be completely if the problem went away and we didn't need to do this anymore. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the situation. Whenever they [shootings] happen we start to think about from the initial coverage that seems to have gone well [or] that didn't go well. Over time we will gather more information and we actually have a very active research arm tries to collect information on the events and summarizes and sees what lessons we can learn."

There have been reports that a fire alarm was pulled during the shooting. Blair says this is not a good idea, because it causes students to leave their classrooms and become easy targets.

It will likely take about a year to fully research the Santa Fe High School shooting.
