TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — One member of Lake Travis Fire and Rescue remains hospitalized Thursday after losing consciousness at the wheel Wednesday.

Engineer William Tatsch, a 17-year veteran of Travis County ESD 6, underwent a series of tests at Round Rock Medical Center to determine what caused him to pass out prior to the crash. Braden Frame with Lake Travis Fire Fighters Association said Tatsch never showed previous signs of a medical condition.

"There were no warning signs the morning of," Frame said. "This is completely an accident that happened out of the blue."

Frame released dispatch recordings Thursday, which included Firefighter Joel Niemeyer requesting help over the two-way radio after being injured in the rollover crash.

"Fire dispatch from Engine 604," Niemeyer said. "We have been in a wreck!"

Knowing the five-vehicle crash involved several victims, Niemeyer asked for a series of first aid.

"We need fire, EMS and STAR Flight," he said. "We ran multiple vehicles off the road."

Niemeyer insisted again shortly after that STAR Flight be dispatched, noting that Tatsch was unconscious.

"Do you have STARFlight involved in this call, also," Niemeyer asked.

Lt. Rachel Zambrano was riding in the front passenger seat of the fire engine. Frame said she experienced a concussion and cuts to the head, requiring seven stitches at the hospital. Niemeyer was at the rear of the fire engine, along with Firefighter Brian Baker. Both Niemeyer and Baker tended to the 10 other victims on the scene before seeking medical attention for themselves, Frame said.

"They deferred their own care to take care of all of the other patients who were on scene," he said.

Frame said the fire department is glad nobody died in the crash. However, they are still worried about Tatsch's recovery.

"We are still very concerned for his health and well-being," Frame said.

He said Zambrano also faces a significant recovery process. Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash as doctors try to determine what caused Tatsch to lose consciousness.
