AUSTIN, Texas — Some couples are taking a page out of the Royal Wedding playbook and learning to dance like royalty.

Julia Meek and Austin Conner are getting royal-ready by learning traditional ballroom dances at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Central Austin.

“Our instructors have been incredible in making us comfortable, so we’re actually able to be in it together, to be able to show the love that we have,” Meek said.

They said learning the different styles has helped strengthen their love.

"Communication is huge in dancing and it's helped us in other parts of our relationship, too," Conner said. "I think that's going to carry through, because you can’t pull this off alone."

"If they don’t remember the steps that's totally fine with me. I just want them to be able to actually pay attention to what the other person's needs are, because that’s going to not only affect how they are on the dance floor, but also on their daily lives,” dance instructor, Hannah Ringley said.

The 28-year-olds have been together for five years. As Meek and Conner plan their big day for this spring, they cannot help but to think about what the Royal family will do this week. Meek said that her parents actually are planning to wake up early to watch Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials.

“My parents are really excited for the Royal Wedding, they’re all about traditions,” Meek said.

“You can’t help but be curious,” Conner said. “It’s like, ‘what are they going to do that we haven’t thought of, what are we doing that we like a little bit more.’”

When it comes to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first dance, instructors have a few ideas about what it will be.

“Traditionally they do very proper ballroom dances and because Meghan Markle is an American and she’s an American actress and she’s a little bit more exciting, they might Americanize something like the waltz and open up the frame a little bit more,” instructor Dillon Heggie said.  “Or we may see something a little bit more exciting like a cha cha.”

There are rumors that the pair will dance to Whitney Houston. As for Meek and Conner, they said their first dance will be a rumba to reflect their athleticism, which is what brought them together. While they said it will be fun to see what the Royals actually decide, Meek and Conner know that their dance is something they will treasure and share with loved ones.

“You have personal celebrities in your life who make you feel super super important, just because they decided to show up for your day,” Conner said.

“Our families the people we’re closest to are coming in,” Meek said. “Their eyes will be on us.”
