AUSTIN, Texas -- A survey finds that shoppers spend more on their wives and mothers-in-law than on their own mothers.

The 2018 Mother's Day Shopping and Spending Survey was released by Offers.com at the end of April.

The survey found that 85 percent of consumers will celebrate Mother's Day and 60 percent of shoppers said that their mother's present was a top priority, but that doesn't mean they are spending top dollar.

"This year we decided to go with flowers, but we also have a few other things, but flowers kind of as a base," Josh Mantooth said.

Mantooth says this year he spent about 100 dollars on her and half of that on his mom and mother-in-law.

"I like to spoil my wife, that's about it. I like to do fun surprises for her," he said.

On average, consumers reported they will likely spend about $42 on their mom, but about $77 dollars on their wife and mother-in-law.

For Rick MaGee, this is survey is accurate for him and his partner, but only because his mom lives out-of-state.

"I like to do nice things for her and my mother is going to get plenty of Mother's Day action. My brother is going to take her out," MaGee said.

The top gifts in the survey for both moms and wives were either something personalized or flowers.

The National Retail Federation expects spending to reach $23.1 billion this year.
