Richard Overton is turning 112 years old on Friday, May 11, and is now believed to be one of the oldest people in the country.
He was 33 years old when the war began and served until the war ended in 1945.
A lifelong Texan, Overton came home from the war and settled in East Austin in 1948, where he still lives today.
Despite his age, Overton remains active with his sense of humor intact.
"I feel fine every day. No pain. No aches. Lot of people think I am going to die. I don't die yet. When God comes and gets you, you die," said Overton.

Overton said he enjoys life's simple pleasures, like sitting on his porch, chatting with his family and cracking jokes like a youngster. He also likes his cigars and whiskey.
"Done it all my life since I was 18 years old. It don't hurt you, if you know how to drink it,” said Overton.
The Overton family has set up a GoFundMe to help with costs associated with in-home care instead of a nursing home per his request. If you'd like to donate, the account is here.
