AUSTIN, Texas – The mother charged in connection to the death of her son, who was found buried in southeast Austin in 2014, was back in court for a pretrail hearing on Thursday.
- Michael Turner sentenced to 20 years for role in Colton Turner's death
- CPS: Mother of Colton Turner gave birth to new baby in February
- Meagan Work pleads not guilty in toddler death
At the hearing, a blow to Meagan Work's defense team with the judge ruling Work's statements made to Cedar Park police after she was arrested in 2014 can be used in her trial.
Work's attorneys argued those statements should be inadmissible because police didn't let her see a judge within 48 hours, but the judge rejected that argument.
Work and her boyfriend, Michael Turner, were both charged with tampering with evidence following the death of 2-year-old Colton Turner in 2014.
She and Turner claimed Colton died after he fell and hit his head. However, investigators said the couple did not call police or for medical help. Prosecutors said they hid Colton’s death and buried him in a shallow grave.
Turner pled guilty to reckless injury to a child and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
According to affidavits, Work told police numerous stories about what happened to Colton. First, she said he had been kidnapped. She then said she had given him away. Finally, she claimed that he hit his head on an A/C unit and died in a motel room.
When authorities found Colton’s body in the grave, they determined that he had been dead for months.
The trial was originally set for last fall but was delayed.
Jury selection will begin sometime in August.
