AUSTIN, Texas -- The weekend is here, and we’re starting with an Ozone Action Day.

Saturday will be dry and sunny, and winds will be calm - conditions favorable for producing high levels of ozone pollution.

You can prevent ozone pollution by:

  • Leave the car at home. Instead carpool, take the bus, walk or bike. You’ll help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, as well as save some money.
  • Eliminate vehicle idling by skipping the drive-thru lanes and avoiding travel when slowdowns are most common.
  • Conserve energy. Turn the thermostat up when not at home. Utilize fans, close blinds to reduce sun penetration. Turn off or unplug electrical devices when not in use.
  • Keep vehicle properly tuned. This includes maintaining the exhaust system, proper air pressure in tires, and oil changes.
  • Refuel after dusk, and don’t “top off”. Stop fueling once the nozzle has stopped for the first time.

It's strongly recommended that people with respiratory issues limit their time outdoors Saturday. As we start warming up and heading into the summer months, these Ozone Action Days will become more common, so start practicing healthy choices for the environment now.
