SAN MARCOS, Texas — San Marcos has been named a “Best Place to Retire" by Forbes Magazine.

In its new list, Forbes picked cities by median housing prices, cost of living, climate, taxes and quality of life.

“There is something in San Marcos for everyone, whether you are beginning your career or finishing it,” said Mayor John Thomaides. “We are proud to have been recognized by Forbes as a top place to retire.”

The site noted the overall cost of living in San Marcos is 13 percent below the national average.

It’s also home to Texas State University, where seniors 65 and older can audit classes for free, the article says.

According to the city, San Marcos offers a range of housing options for retirees, including Kissing Tree, a new baby boomer-centric housing community covering 1,300 acres.
