SAN ANTONIO - Short-term rental options like Airbnb are a popular option for the city's visitors during busy events, but at least one group supports stricter regulation.

Fiesta events like the King William Fair on Sunday bring thousands of people into the city. Proceeds from that event benefit the King William Association, a nonprofit that works to preserve and protect the historic district.

"Every couple of years an issue comes around that really ignites the passion of our residents," said Chris price with the King William Association.

Price said the group has had many discussions about short-term rentals in the past year.

The association supports using of short-term rentals, but only when the homeowner is at home, the subject of a City Council ordinance called STR 1. The group wants to see density and music restrictions placed on short-term rental properties, and believes a licensing process should be put in place for these types of rentals.

"There's somebody on-premise that can monitor behavior to monitor parking issues if that comes up,” he said. “It helps maintain the residential character of the neighborhood."

The City has been looking at options on how to handle short-term rentals and previously put a task force in place. Price said he expects the city to look at the issue again in the upcoming months.
