SAN ANTONIO — People in multiple counties across Texas saw hail due to Friday’s storm. When severe weather hits, it’s always best to avoid being outside. However if that isn’t possible, here are some tips to minimize hail damage on and off the road.

If you are in a vehicle:

  • Stay inside the vehicle. Hail falls at fast speeds, and can cause injury.
  • Pull over to a safe place, such as a parking garage or under an awning, so hail doesn't break the windshield or any windows.
  • Do not leave the vehicle until it stops hailing.
  • Don't lean against car windows. If possible, get to the center of the car.

If you are outdoors:

  • Seek shelter immediately.
  • Try and find something to protect your entire body, or at least find something to protect your head.
  • Do not hide under trees. Large, isolated trees attract lightning.

Protecting your vehicle

  • Don’t park your car out in the open. Put it in a garage or some other covered area.
  • The next best option is to have some sort of cover. Use blankets, comforters, quilts, floor mats, as car covers.
