BUDA, Texas — People in one of the fastest growing counties in Central Texas will soon have more options when it comes to access to health care. Two medical centers are being built in Buda, and they are on the same road.

Baylor Scott & White and Seton both celebrated the beginning of construction Wednesday morning. Baylor Scott and White’s center on White Wing Trail includes a full-service hospital, primary care and specialty care under one roof.

“All of our providers are on the same team, and we’re working together to improve your health, so we think that’s a differentiating aspect,” said Pete McCanna, president of Baylor Scott & White Health.

The hospital network’s leaders take pride in this integrated model.

“It’s a new model that really asks us to be really responsive to the busy lifestyle that families have today,” McCanna said.

The Ascension Seton Health Center is less than a half mile away. The 20,000-square-foot facility offers primary care, as well as access to specialists and extended hours and walk-in appointments.

“We selected putting the Ascension Seton Health Center here in Buda because of the really exponentially growing community and it really is an example of Seton’s ongoing commitment to make sure that we’re taking care of people at their home,” said Kate Henderson, regional hospital president for Seton Healthcare Family.

City leaders said medical services are lacking throughout Buda, as the population continues to rise in Hays County.

“Health care is a very competitive very growing industry. People will always need health care and so I think they’re both recognizing that this is an emerging market.” said Ann Miller, executive director of the Buda Economic Development Corporation.

Baylor Scott & White plans to generate 150 jobs within the next four years. Meanwhile, Seton said initially it will create 50 jobs and will add services to meet the needs of the community. Both medical centers expect to open in 2019, and with that comes other expectations.

“You increase the daytime population which means it’s more attractive to retailers and particularly restaurants to locate here,” Miller said.

St. David’s HealthCare  has also announced its plans to build a 24-hour emergency care center in Buda. The emergency department will include 12 treatment beds, a CT scanner and advanced testing capabilities, including radiological testing, and a medical lab. Construction is set to begin later this month. It's not far from the other facilities, located on the other side of Interstate 35.

“As Buda grows, so does its need for advanced, comprehensive emergency care,” Todd Steward, the chief executive officer of St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, said in a news release. “St. David’s South Austin Medical Center has long been a leader in providing quality health care and exceptional outcomes to patients in Central Texas, and this new center will allow us to bring that same level of expertise to the residents of Buda.”
