NATIONWIDE — Google Maps' newest ‘Easter egg,’ ironically features a character whose popularity rose in the 90s over his ability to not be located.

An Easter egg is an intentional inside joke, hidden message or image or secret feature of a work usually nestled into a video game or film.

Earlier this month, Google Maps unveiled a Mario Kart-themed version of its directions app. Now, in honor of April Fool's Day, it's home to Waldo of the “Where's Waldo?” seek-and-find books.

When opening the app between today and Wednesday, April 4, you'll see Waldo hiding in the upper left-hand corner of your screen.

Clicking on the image will launch a virtual game, in which players have to scroll, pan and zoom to find Waldo and his friends in various locations throughout the world.

Not entirely sure what this has to do with April Fool's joke, but it’s fun! And, who doesn’t love the round-rimmed, striped shirt-wearing Waldo?

Google also said there's a Google Assistant component to this campaign; you can ask “Where’s Waldo?” on a Home speaker, Chromebook or Android smartphone and something will happen.
