WASHINGTON -- A retired Supreme Court Justice is calling for the repeal of the Second Amendment.

John Paul Stevens wrote an essay for The New York Times that calls it outdated and misunderstood.

Stevens is calling for the Second Amendment to be replaced with new gun control legislation and said the repeal would weaken the power of the National Rifle Association in creating those new laws.

In 2008, Judge Stevens was on the losing end of a high court ruling that said the Second Amendment gives individuals the right to own a gun for self-defense. In years past he's called for changing the amendment to allow for more gun control.

Stevens retired in 2010.
