AUSTIN, Texas -- A man died while he was in custody of the Travis County Sheriff’s Office early Sunday morning after he was seen eating a white powdery substance, authorities said.

The incident began around 11 p.m. Friday when deputies responded to a call at a nightclub in the 16300 block of North IH-35 due to an altercation between a patron and a security guard.

Police said Anthony Ray Harris, 35, of Cedar Park was seen in possession of what was assumed to be narcotics and then police said he was seen eating all of the white powdery substance. Harris was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center where he was examined and released.

The suspect was then transported to the Travis County jail.

Upon arrival, Harris began having seizures and paramedics transported Harris back to the same hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 3:30 a.m..

A multi-agency investigation is underway, as is customary with any death in custody. A final autopsy report is pending toxicology results.
