CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A fatal pedestrian accident in northwest Charlotte claimed the life of an 85-year-old woman and her pet.

Around 9:45 Saturday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers say Franziska Bruckner was attempting to cross Moores Chapel Road at the intersection of Tilden Road, when she stepped off the curb directly into the path of a Hyundai Sonata.

Bruckner was walking her dog at the time. Both she and the dog were hit and thrown to the pavement. They both died.

According to police, Bruckner was not crossing in a marked crosswalk. Police say the driver stopped her car immediately and got out to try and help the victim.

Investigators do not believe the driver was impaired or speeding.
