SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Spa city residents will have to wait a few more weeks to see if the proposed Code Blue shelter gets the green light.

The city planning board did not vote on the project Thursday night. A public hearing will be held on April 5.

Shelters of Saratoga wants to build a permanent shelter on Franklin Street to help the homeless population. But a group of residents in that neighborhood has opposed the project. They say the neighborhood does not have the capacity to handle such a large facility.

"If you look at any other code blue shelter or homeless shelter in the Capital Region, it's usually in a mixed-use neighborhood, not a residential neighborhood," said Joe Bonilla, a spokesperson for the group opposed to the project. "And that's what we're looking for. We're looking for a smart approach and a real conversation on how to address this."

"Over the last four years, we've helped transition over 60 people from the streets to Code Blue to something permanent," said Michael Finocchi, the executive director of the Shelters of Saratoga. "So it works."

The group opposing this project says it will propose an alternative site in the next few weeks.
