AUSTIN, TEXAS - More than a month after unveiling its newest show bike, Motorcycle Missions has already used it to win big across the country.

The local nonprofit organization is celebrating taking home the championship trophy in the freestyle class of the J&P Cycles Ultimate Biker Build Off. This win came shortly after their qualifying victory at a bike show in Dallas where they won in the same category as well took home the People's Choice Award. But Motorcycle Missions Founder Krystal Hess said that her organization doesn't build bikes for recognition. They do it to heal.

"Its not about the accolades," Hess said. "It’s about being together and building together and healing together."

Hess arranged an award ceremony at Cowboy Harley-Davidson, a partner of Motorcycle Missions, for the veterans that couldn't make the trip to the bike show in Chicago. It was there that the vets that worked on the bike got recognition for their championship bike. Many of the vets who never worked on bikes before, including U.S. Marines Veteran Erik Sherman, was surprised to see their work bring home the gold.

"A whirlwind ride, I'll tell you what," Sherman said. "Just an amazing experience for this bike to go the distance it's already gone."

As they bask in the glory of this victory, they prepare themselves for what's next to come for the organization. Motorcycle Missions members still have plenty of projects on their plate for the rest of the year, including a tricycle build for a veteran that lost limbs in combat. Hess said that this work has a way of bringing together veterans both in and out of her organization

"It's not over, we always want these guys back," Hess said. "We want them to participate with Motorcycle Missions ongoing. We’re building a family, and it’s all around bikes."
