AUSTIN, Texas -- For the second year in a row, rain clouds hovered over Zilker Park for the 89th annual ABC Kite Fest in Austin

"We were worried about canceling last night, but it turned out the rain really wasn't much," said Bobby Jenkins, an organizer and president of ABC Commercial Services.

Organizers of the kite festival thought they may have to take a rain check on this year's event.

"We came out early just in case, wandered around in the rain, but look at this," said festival-goer Kevin Clark.

People weathered the small on-and-off storms, and sure enough, the rain brought out a rainbow and somehow perfect weather for flying a kite.

"Sun is coming out winds picking up. We are excited!" said Gayle Woodul.

Woodul is a professional kite flyer with 20 years of experience. She travels for festivals like this and brings her large kites, which cost thousands of dollars.

"You're always dependent on the weather," said Woodul.

After the disappointment of traveling to Austin last year for both weekends of the festival, which was ultimately canceled, she's thankful the weather cleared up and worked in their favor.

"The sun will help dry the kites out, which makes them lighter weight. If they are heavy by being wet, they are fighting against the wind. You need more wind to overcome the resistance of that wet kite," said Woodul.

The festival start time pushed back to let the rain pass. The weather cleared up late in the morning.
