AUSTIN, Texas — A fight broke out during the Texas Independence Day parade on Saturday as protesters clashed with a group honoring Confederate Veterans.

The incident began when a parade commemorating Texas' Independence marched down Congress Avenue Saturday morning. Organizations from all over Texas were taking part in the celebration.

The Sons of the Confederacy float in particular brought out a small group of protesters. They initially planned to walk alongside those carrying the confederate flag to the Capitol, but just a few minutes in, a fight started.

"It sort of ended up in a dog pile," said Glenda McKinney, who attended the parade to protest.

Those involved said someone's sign was taken, which in turn led to a brawl between the two groups. The group Texas Nomads SAR showed up to protect the float, knowing opposers would be there.

"They made threats prior to this event that they were going to fall in and cause problems with the Confederates flying the Confederate flag," said Jeremy Brooks with Texas Nomads.

Protesters, on the other hand, said they were peaceful and wanted to exercise their right to free speech.

"My ancestors did own slaves that it is incumbent on me to try to make the world better in whatever way I can to make reparations for that," said McKinney.

The fight was broken up quickly, but it was too late. One protestor ended up with a bloody face, one of the Texas Nomads in handcuffs.

"It's upsetting to me that people can get so angry about this. They are not willing to just talk about it," said McKinney.

Neither group agrees on who started the fight and don't seem any closer to hearing each other's side.
