TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — Police have arrested a former Travis County high school student after he allegedly made threats to the the school’s choir group.

According to the affidavit, Vandegrift High School's resource officer received a text about a “serious situation” at the school. He learned from staff that 18-year-old Viet Quoc Duong posted a  “disturbing” message on social media.

Duong posted a photo of himself sitting in a pew at a church the VHS Choir performed at on Feb. 27 with a threatening message. He followed that post up with a photo of himself in a vehicle holding a gun.

School staff told police Duong was kicked out of the choir program last year and still held animosity toward the choir group and the class.

Police found Duong at his home where he voluntarily let police look at his phone while they questioned him about the posts. He claimed he only made the post of himself holding a gun. A screenshot of the photo in the church showed the screen name for both posts were the same.

Duong is charged with terroristic threat, a third-degree felony. His bond is set at $25,000.

A statement from Principal Corey Ryan was sent to parents saying:

As safety is our priority at Vandegrift, we want to make you aware of a recent situation in an effort to keep you informed.

We received information that a former student posted a threatening image and message on Instagram. Because it was a former student, we immediately notified law enforcement. The Travis County Sheriff’s office has arrested the individual on felony charges, and he is presently in police custody.

We have no information to suggest there is a threat to our campus.

If your student has additional concerns or questions about his or her safety, please refer them to our administrative team or their school counselor, and we will provide the appropriate support.

I am extremely grateful for the individuals who were proactive and shared this concern with us so we could promptly investigate the issue and involve law enforcement. Thank you for your continued support of Vandegrift High School.
