About 6:30 p.m. on Monday, New Braunfels police were called to the Lowe’s home improvement store located at 1455 IH 35 South. A man demanded cash from an employee before driving off, police said.

The suspect’s vehicle was spotted on northbound Interstate 35 and police attempted to pull the man over.

When the driver failed to stop, officers placed a spike strip on the road, puncturing the suspect vehicle’s tires. The man kept driving, however, and police used a Pursuit Intervention Technique to push the car sideways.

Police said the driver, identified by police as Ramirez, refused to exit the vehicle, and officers fired bean bag rounds at the vehicle.

Police further said Ramirez began yelling that he had a gun and would start shooting if officers didn’t back away. The New Braunfels Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT responded, and a three-hour standoff ensued.

Ramirez was eventually taken into custody and treated for injuries at a nearby hospital. He was charged with aggravated robbery, evading arrest with a vehicle and resisting arrest.
