AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Police Department on Wednesday identified the suspect fatally shot by officers during a SWAT incident Monday as well as the officers involved.

The decedent was identified as 23-year-old Thomas Vincent Alvarez.

The officers involved in the shooting are:

  • Matthew Henion, who has been with the department for six years. He is assigned to APD’s Organized Crime Unit.
  • DeAndre Wright, who has been with the department for six years. Wright is currently assigned to APD’s Organized Crime Unit.
  • Nicholas Gebhart, who has been with the department for five years. Gebhart is assigned to APD’s Organized Crime Unit.
  • Benjamin Rogers, who has been with the department for four years. He is assigned to the Southeast/Southwest Patrol.
  • Robert Brady, who has been with the department for four years. Brady is currently assigned to APD’s Southeast/Southwest Patrol.
  • Rafael Rosales, who has been with the department for 17 years. Rosales is assigned to APD’s Special Operations Unit.
  • Khristof Oborski, who has been with the department for 17 years. Oborski is assigned to the Special Operations Unit.

Per department procedure, the seven officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. The shooting is being investigated by APD’s Internal Affairs Unit and monitored by the Office of Police Monitor.

About 5:31 p.m. on Feb. 19, police responded to a report of a confrontation between roommates in the 3300 block of Parker Lane, which is located in southeast Austin. Police said that subsequent to the initial confrontation, Alvarez followed the roommates to the 4800 block of Nuckols Crossing Road in a taxi cab.

It was then, police said, Alvarez pulled a gun multiple times on officers at the scene.

Just before 7 p.m., officers opened fired when Alvarez failed to drop his weapon, police said. Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said video from an officer’s body camera confirmed officers’ account of the event.
