WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas - Workers on Tuesday morning began using an excavator to stabilize the edges of the recently discovered cave located on Cambria Drive in Williamson County.

Williamson County officials said the efforts should prevent pieces from falling on workers inside the cave. The stabilized entrance is twenty feet longer than the previous entrance.

Workers also installed a new cave cover that accommodates the new entrance and uses pre-treated lumber with a joint and truss system. The cover is designed to be in place for various weather conditions over several weeks.

County officials also said consultants have completed a draft profile view of the cave, which shows the difficulty in exploring the cave because of narrow passages between chambers.

Williamson County has expanded the fenced-in area around the cave for safety considerations. Cambria Drive will remain closed for several weeks as the remediation efforts continue.
