AUSTIN, Texas — On Tuesday, the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested a man wanted by the Austin Police Department for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon during an armed robbery at an Austin gas station Feb. 10.

Justin Lamar Mitchell, 32, was arrested at the Walnut Forrest Inn, located at 11506 North Interstate Highway 35 in Austin.

According to an affidavit filed by the APD, Mitchell allegedly committed an armed robbery at a Chevron gas station located at 2300 E. Ben White Boulevard in Southeast Austin just before 10 p.m. Feb. 10.

Authorities say that he assaulted and forced the store clerk at gunpoint to open the registers. Mitchell allegedly took the money from the registers and left the scene.

The clerk received minor injuries from the attack, police said.

Austin detectives responded and learned through surveillance video that the suspect entered the store prior to the robbery and was observed retrieving a Vitamin Water, with his left hand, from a cooler. The suspect walked to the register, but left bottle of water on the counter and exited the store without a purchased transaction.

An Austin Crime Scene Unit arrived on scene and was able to collect a latent fingerprint from the bottle. The print was analyzed and identified to be Mitchell’s.

The Task Force said a warrant was obtained Feb. 14 for Mitchell’s arrest, and after conducting an investigation, learned that Mitchell was residing at the hotel.

During the arrest, Mitchell barricaded in his room for approximately 30 minutes and tossed a firearm out of the window. Task Force Officers continued to negotiate with Mitchell, and he eventually surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody without further incident.

Mitchell has been handed over to the Austin Police Department.
