AUSTIN, Texas — A 17-year-old boy has been arrested after an officer allegedly found a fully-loaded handgun in his possession while on campus.

On Feb. 13, police were called to American YouthWorks, a southeast Austin charter school that provides at-risk youth with GED courses and job training, after receiving reports of a suspicious person, according to an arrest affidavit.

Police said administrators told them that a suspect, identified by police as 17-year-old Richard Alaniz, was driving recklessly through the school’s lot.

In the affidavit, police said when they arrived, they were told that the campus director saw a group of males walking out of a restroom together with Alaniz. The affidavit said she found this to be suspicious and stopped them.

The campus director said Alaniz was "showing his 'colors' by hanging a blue bandana from his right pocket" — a common item used to represent a gang affiliation.

She asked Alaniz to remove the bandana, grabbing for it to find a loaded gun magazine inside it.

Alaniz was then placed in an office room.

When police arrived, they frisked Alaniz and found a loaded handgun on him.

Alaniz has been charged with unlawful carry of a weapon in a prohibited place and his bond is set at $20,000.

Records indicate he’s still in police custody as of Friday morning.
