AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department’s bike officers are now better equipped to hit the road.

Parsley Energy partnered with the department to give new safety gear to all 50 bicycle officers. Each officer was measured and fitted for new helmets and body gear.

“To give them a much better level of protection they have today, were fortunate to be able to do that,” Interim Police Chief Brian Manley said.

The new gear allows the bicycle team to perform all duty-related functions while on bicycles, specifically during events with large crowds. The new helmets have front facial pieces that are removable based on their needs. The additional body gear is similar to the ones worn by used in BMX racers to protect officers from falls and wrecks.
