STATEWIDE — While it seems like common sense for drivers to stop whenever they see a school bus loading or unloading students, school districts in Austin and San Antonio are seeing an increased frequency of just the opposite.

School districts even installed bus cameras hoping to deter drivers from passing their buses illegally. But, they don't seem to be enough.

More drivers are passing stopped school buses, most of them caught on camera. Last year, Austin ISD saw 33 percent more drivers doing that compared to 2016.

Aside from breaking the law, these drivers also put students' safety in jeopardy. Two years ago, two Austin students were hit when drivers passed school buses illegally.

Here's a refresher on passing school buses in Texas:

  • Drivers in both directions are required to stop if they see a school bus loading or unloading students.
  • If there's a barrier or median, drivers going the same direction as the school bus should stop.
  • Drivers may proceed once the school bus starts moving.

If you're caught on camera passing a school bus illegally, it comes with a fine of up to $300. If a a police officer catches you, that could ring up to $1,250.
