SAN ANTONIO – With the strong flu season still in full swing, Metro Health is making sure people take extra precautions.

San Antonio health officials are on high alert with over 2,300 flu-related deaths in Texas this season. To help fight the outbreak, Metro Health is giving away free flu vaccines.

San Antonio resident Yvonne Ruiz gets the flu shot every year and this time she brought her entire family.

“I went pick both of them up. Okay, we’re going, I’m not asking,” said Ruiz. “The way things have been going this year. It’s been really intense. I have never heard of someone dying from the flu before.”

A long line of people stretched outside the clinic on Thursday.

“So far this year, we’ve had one pediatric death, and unfortunately that’s along the lines of what we see every year,” said Carol Schliesinger with Metro Health.

Medical experts want to remind everyone that it’s not too late to get protected.

“The folks that should definitely get it are those with underlying health conditions like diabetes. And, certainly people 65 years of age or older, and pregnant women. When a pregnant woman gets a vaccine she’s able to pass some of that immunity to their baby in utero,” said Schliesinger.

Metro Health expects to have free vaccines at the Frank Garrett Community Center until the end of the week and possibly the beginning of next week.
