AUSTIN, Texas — Some Bridgepoint Elementary School students found out what it's like to be a doctor.

On Friday, Jan. 26, medical officials from the Heart Hospital of Austin taught students some heart surgery skills in honor of STEAM day.

Students used pig hearts for their mock procedures. Doctors praised their willingness to learn, and some kids want to learn more.

"As they get engaged and the questions come and the excitement comes, they really get hands on," Heart Director Frank Zidar said. "They're able to open the heart, sow stitches. It's really neat to see the lights go off. The questions they ask are phenomenal."

"It's really educational, and I really wish they would have two each year," student Aalon Bellm said.

Students also learned how ultrasounds can help their pets. STEAM Day aims to show different options kids have in math, science, art and technology.
