AUSTIN, Texas – What started out as burglary in progress ended with the suspect dead after firing at police in Central Austin Friday morning.

A 911 call at 3:40 a.m. alerted police about a burglary in progress at a home on the 4500 block of Avenue G. At 3:43 a.m. witnesses heard gunshots inside the home.

Police arrived at 3:44 a.m. to find the suspect trying to flee in a vehicle while the residents hid inside a closet.

As police asked the suspect to stop, he reportedly fired a gun at the officers. Austin police said they returned fire and shot the suspect.

Austin/Travis County EMS pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.

Avenue G is closed in both directions from 44th Street to 46th Street.

Investigators have not said if the home-owners were injured in the shooting.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley tweeted, "While our officers never want to fire their weapons in the line of duty, I am grateful that they responded quickly to this morning’s home invasion on Avenue G and took action to protect the residents in that home and in our community.”
