AUSTIN, Texas — A new ordinance could make paid sick leave a requirement for Austin businesses.

Work Strong Austin and City Council members held a community briefing about the ordinance Wednesday

It would require Austin businesses to offer at least eight days of paid sick leave to employees. Businesses violating that law might have to pay a $500 penalty. Council members said the ordinance could have long term positive effects for Austin's workforce.

"We believe that our economy as a whole and all the families in our communities would be healthier and better off if we had guaranteed paid sick days for everyone that works inside of Austin city limits," City Councilor Greg Casar said.

The ordinance is still subject to change. A final City Council vote is set for Feb. 15.
