AUSTIN, Texas - Meals on Wheels is back open in Austin after the weather forced it to close on Tuesday.

Volunteers delivered 3,000 meals Wednesday.

On Tuesday, managers decided it was too dangerous for the cooks to come in at their usual 3 a.m. start time.

Meals on Wheels case managers called clients last week in anticipation of the bad weather to make sure they had food or family to look after them.

"If someone out there has an elderly neighbor, I encourage them to check on them during these cold spells. That's what our volunteers do every lunch day but you just can't have enough people checking on these homebound folk," said Thad Rosenfeld of Meals on Wheels Central Texas.

Meals on Wheels delivers a shelf-stable meal to their clients once a year for incidents just like this.
