AUSTIN, Texas –  One person is dead after a vehicle fell nearly 30 feet off of a southwest Austin overpass on Tuesday afternoon.

The vehicle went over the guard rail around 5:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of West Slaughter Lane, accoring to Austin Travis County EMS.

One man in his 30s or 40s died at the scene of the crash, but a second man in his 40s was taken to the South Austin Medical Center with critical injuries. 

The Austin Police Department did not did not identify either man and could not provide an update on the condition of the man in the hospital on Wednesday. 

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but APD is asking the Texas Department of Transportation if the overpass was de-iced any time prior to the crash. 

APD responded to 106 crashes on Tuesday, but the crash on Slaughter Lane was the only traffic death. On an average day, APD responds to 99 crashes.
