AUSTIN, Texas -- On Saturday, the National Guard's environmental Program and Camp Mabry hosted the 4th Annual Youth fishing Derby.

The event was open to the community, and provided visitors a fun day of fishing for Rainbow Trout.

Fishing equipment was available for those who didn't have their own. The Texas Army National Guard environmental program partnered with Texas Parks and Wildlife and U.S. Fish and Wildlife, hoping to spread the word about the widespread opportunities at Camp Mabry.

"It's been a geat year, and next year we hope to get more, try to do it longer and try to have more individuals show up to enjoy and spread the word,” said Nicholas Colby, Wildlife Biologist with the Texas Military Department Environmental Branch.

"We've invited kids and their parents to come out and use our pond we've stocked the pond ith about 2000 trout, and so they have the opportunity to come out and practice some conservation and get exposed to the great outdoors,” said Chief John Rote, of the Texas Military Department Environmental Branch.

In addition to fishing there were other fun and educational activities for children to engage in. The event was free to kids ages 14 and younger.
