What is the Puppy Bowl?

On Super Bowl Sunday, Americans across the country will gather in front of their televisions and laptops, set aside differences for the love of sport...and puppies. Animal Planet’s fuzziest competition is airs Feb. 4, for the 14th year in a row of delighting football fans and non-fans alike with hours of puppy antics for a good cause.

It was inspired by the Yule Log

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014:

"During a meeting, a suggestion was made that the best defense against the programming juggernaut would be to "point a camera at puppies" on a football field, in a sort of dog version of the televised burning Yule Log that airs every holiday season. Margo Kent, the executive producer for Puppy Bowl I, remembers that "It was always a joke: How do you counter the Super Bowl? Let's just put a box of puppies up there and call it a day. It's not worth trying to go against the Super Bowl," said David Doyle, a former Animal Planet vice president of program development.

‘The Biggest Game in Adoption’

The Puppy Bowl, first and foremost, serves as a platform for animal shelters nationwide. A video on the Puppy Bowl’s website brags that the event is “the biggest game in adoption.” In 2017, 78 dogs came from shelters and rescue organizations from various states and Puerto Rico, and every “player" is up for adoption.

What if I want to adopt one of the puppies?

According to the Animal Planet website, each of the dogs come from a shelter and the bio for each puppy includes the shelter they came from. You can find information on shelters the dogs came from on the official Puppy Bowl website in the "Adopt" section and, from there, you can get contacting them to see if your favorites still need a home. They also have a list of shelters nationwide.

There’s a kitten halftime show

Each year, the Puppy Bowl features a Kitten Half-Time Show. And the Hallmark channel debuted a Kitten Bowl during Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014, which is another option for those looking to keep it kitten. It premieres at noon, so in theory, you could catch both.

Puppy Bowl XIII airs Sunday, Feb. 4, at 3 p.m. ET on Animal Planet. It will repeat for 10 hours.
