AUSTIN, Texas — The city is just a few days away from celebrating New Year's Eve, but as 2017 comes to a close, Texas will be welcoming some freezing weather.

"We're going to get this arctic cold front that's going to blow through sometime during the day on New Year's Eve,” Kelly Slifka, Spectrum News Meteorologist said. “As we get toward midnight, it'll probably drop below freezing, and then expect by New Year's Day morning, in the twenties."

It's not just the cold that will affect people’s plans, but the front is expected to bring strong winds gusting around 30 miles per hour.

"Definitely gonna have to bundle up, gloves, the hat,” Slifka said. “If you're gonna be outdoors trying to watch the fireworks, you're just gonna have to try to stay out of the wind as much as you can and try to stay as warm as possible.”

The City of Austin says its show will go on. The annual New Year's Eve event runs from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. wrapping up with a fireworks finale at Auditorium Shores.

"This is a rain or shine event, Sylnovia Rabb with the City of Austin said. “We are ready to go full steam ahead 100 percent. So come on out, put your gloves on, put your coats on, but bring your dancing shoes and have a good time."

While the cold won't be an issue for some, others are already planning to avoid the chilly weather at all costs.

"I'm gonna stay at home where it's warm,” Josh Alexander, an Austin Resident said. “I don't know that it's going to be warm enough to go out on New Year's Eve here, so I'll just stay at home and watch the ball drop."
