NATIONWIDE — In America's urban areas, 3,081 people were murdered in the first half of 2017, according to the latest Major Cities Chiefs Association's violent crimes survey.

This is up from 2,994 people for the same period in 2016. The survey shows comparison from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2017.

The Major Cities Chiefs Association released the murder rates of 62 cities and major urban centers across the U.S. for the first half of 2017.

According to the report, rates are calculated per 100,000 residents based on the most recent population data for each city.

The top five cities include:

  1. St. Louis, Missouri
  2. Baltimore, Maryland
  3. New Orleans, Louisiana 
  4. Detriot, Michigan 
  5. Cleveland, Ohio 

What Texas cities made the list and where do they rank?

54. Austin, Texas — The murder rate in Austin is 1.2 per 100,000 people.

49. El Paso, Texas — The murder rate in El Paso is also 1.9 per 100,000. (Tied with Mesa, AZ)

39. San Antonio, Texas — The murder rate in San Antonio is 4.1 per 100,000.

36. Fort Worth, Texas — The murder rate in Fort Worth is 4.6 per 100,000.

28. Houston, Texas — The murder rate in Houston is 5.6 per 100,000. That's a 23 percent decrease from the same time last year. In the first half of 2017, 128 people were murdered in the city.  (Tied with Dekalb County, Georgia)

25. Dallas, Texas — The murder rate in Dallas is 6.3 per 100,000. It is unchanged compared with the same period last year.
