AUSTIN, Texas -- Christmas is a time for giving, and nobody knows that better than Roger Lopez.

"We’re giving back where people have forgotten, you know people don’t think about giving back sometimes," he said.

This Christmas Eve, Lopez is sharing his talent as a barber through his organization, Haircuts 4 Homeless. He said he wants to give people not only a haircut, but an opportunity.

“A haircut is one of the things you need for like presentation for an interview," Lopez said. "If we can help somebody get a better chance at getting a job, that’s something that we’re out here doing.”

Haircuts 4 Homeless has grown from a few barbers to several volunteers. People pass out home cooked meals, church groups serve coffee and volunteer groups offer their time to help others get what they need.

“We met Roger about 3 months ago," Dallan Maas from ACTS Church in Lakeway said. "We come out here, we keep bringing more and more coffee and we keep running out so we’ve gotta figure out how to get more coffee out here."

“You just wanna have that smile, you just wanna have that mentality of 'I helped somebody,'" Anthony Giles of Phantom Squad Motorcycle Organization said. "Not even just for the holidays but any day throughout life.”

That giving spirit wasn't lost on the people using the service. Navy Veteran Melvin Magee has been homeless for 7 years and visits Haircuts for Homeless every month. He said he couldn’t be more grateful for their service.

“I really appreciate what you do for me and everybody else that are hurting this time of year," Magee said. "You give us spirit, you raise or spirits, you give us hope and we thank you for your prayers.”

Even though it’s the end of the year, Lopez said he won’t be ending his downtown visits anytime soon.

“I plan on doing it as long as I can, you know if I can help one person to give back to society and be a productive member like that is more of an abundance of a blessing like that is beyond a blessing.”
